Lava Cap Cabernet Sauvignon 2018
Located in the Sierra Foothills, Lava Cap Winery has been producing wines for three generations. I was a little surprised to find that I had not done a review of this wine before. Lava Cap has long been a producer of very fine and affordable wines. For those not familiar with the Sierra Foothills AVA, it is located in California to the East of Sacramento. It is in the region where you would find Lake Tahoe and Yosemite National Park. This is a region that gets greatly overshadowed by its big brothers, Napa and Sonoma. The wine pours a ruby purple color. The aromas have hints of mint along with berries. The flavors are juicy with blackberry up front and a touch of allspice on the finish. The wine is drinkable and approachable now with very medium to mild tannins. A solid wine.
Note: Came back to this wine a couple of days later. I had sealed it using a Vacu Vin. The wine had transformed into an even better version of itself. More far more silky mouthfeel. The tannins had softened even further and created an even better wine. I would probably give this a 9.1 at this point.
