Chateau Famaey Malbec 2012
A French Malbec! I have had Argentinian Malbec many, many times and have always considered it to be a reliable, good value wine. I understand that Malbec is originally from France. I also already knew that Malbec is often used as a blending grape in Bordeaux wines, however I was excited and curious to try my first actual bottle of French Malbec. The nose was a bit disappointing for me as I enjoy a big, heady nose on wine. This bottle had a very light nose with rose or violet. The taste description on the bottle mentions black cherry and red plum however, the taste profile I got was not nearly so big or bold as the bottle wanted you to think. This is a very light Malbec. Flavors are more minerally than fruity. There is some pepper and cherry in there as well. This is not a bad wine, however I am used to the Argentinian version of Malbec which is typically bigger and fruitier. This wine was far to “light” in nose, body and taste for my preference. Upon looking over several reviews for this wine online, I was struck by how different my review was. Most of these reviews mentioned words like “bold,” “tannic,” and “strong full body.” We must have been drinking different wines as the one I drank was far from bold, tannic or full bodied. I often wonder who writes these reviews. I can get one person saying they taste black cherry and another saying it was plum, but when one is saying bold and another saying it is light, well we are now worlds apart.
