Bonny Doon Picpoul 2019
Bonny Doon Vineyards is one of the wineries Mrs. Bacchanalian and I visited on our trip to Paso Robles way back when. It has always held a special place in our hearts, not only because of that special memory, but because it produces some really delicious wines at very reasonable prices. Lovely aromas of green apple, lemon and a kind of saltiness on the nose. The color is a very pale yellow. Leave it to Bonny Doon to utilize a grape varietal (Picpoul) that is so obscure (at least I had never heard of it before this bottle). Turns out (from a little research) that it is a very old grape variety from France. Anyway…the flavors are light with “tart” green apple being a dominate presence. There is maybe some green bell pepper in here as well and a floral note that I could not quite put my finger on. This is a very light bodied and light flavored wine. Would probably go great with seafood and/or spicy foods. To me it seems more like a food wine than just a sipping wine. Would probably not buy it again for just drinking, but I might to go with food.
