Listermann Brewing Company
It feels very odd for me that I am only just now getting around to doing a review for Listermann’s. This was the very first brewery that I came to when I moved here to Cincinnati. This was way back when Listermann’s tasting area was really small. They had a tiny “bar” that was just big enough for one person to stand behind, two old, wooden, outdoor picnic tables for you to sit at and a stack of equally old games to play. But, the beer was good. From humble beginnings…
Now their brewery is far more spacious and their beer selection has grown to equal the space. Listermann is located directly across from Xavier University so expect to see a usually large contingent of students and teachers from the University on any given day. Although fairly quite on the day we visited, drive by any week night and you will see that the place is typically packed with revelers. The once tiny bar has now become a long and beautiful wooden structure that invites you to saddle up and drink some delicious craft beers. The two old, wooden picnic benches are gone from the main area that now sports more traditional bar tables and stools. The long ‘beer hall’ area in the next room used to be loaded with long picnic style tables to create a more communal feel, recently they have removed some of the long tables in favor of smaller individual ones. While the stacks of old games are no longer around, there is a shuffle board table and a giant Jenga game to have fun with. There is also plenty of seating on their front patio area, which is where we decided to park ourselves to enjoy the beer.
Listermann has always had a nice list of brews to choose from. Many styles and inventive beers to please the taste buds. Make your selection from the chalkboard menu on the wall or come up to the bar to view the selections and ask the bartender for a sample. For my first selection I chose the The People Your Parents Warned You About a NEIPA (ABV 7%). Loved this selection! Lots of wonderful tropical notes with a smooth mouthfeel. Very delicious. While I was tempted to stick with this for my second beer, I wanted to try something new for this review so I chose, Body by Listermann (ABV 6.8%). Another winner. Juicy and delicious. I am not sure you can choose a bad beer from these guys. Mrs. Bacchanalian’s first choice was (her usual) Nutcase peanut butter porter (ABV 6.6%). This brew is one of their many award winning beers that they have had around for a long time. I am not a huge fan of peanut butter flavored things in general but I will say that this beer is very smooth and the peanut butter is not overwhelming. Her second selection was the Hellesfire Club Helles lager (ABV 4.4%). Malty and a little sweet with just a touch of the bready quality you find in a Helles. Good beer.
Although there has been food here at Listermann, currently there is no one filling the food area. However, you are welcome to bring food or even have it delivered to you here at the brewery. We brought a bag of chips just to have something to nosh on while we were sipping on our beers. If you enjoy really good craft beer and want a fun and inviting place to drink it, Listermann is the place to come check out. Great beer, nice environment and awesome people.
